How to Succeed as a Writer

If you have hopes of becoming a successful freelance writer, you should know your specialty. There are many different target audiences to aim your writing towards, and each of them require a different approach. Here are some examples of common audiences, along with tips for writing in a couple different genres.
Writing a children’s story is easy. Kids love animals. Create a character that is around the same age group that you would like to address. Until a much older age, children find it difficult to relate to other older people. Situations like learning to ride a bike or learning the importance of sharing are appropriate. Parents love stories with morals. Keep in mind that it is the parents, or grandparents that will be buying it, so appeal to them, too.
One tip on writing good adult non-fiction is to have a point to your story. You need to have some kind of commentary on life or society that they can choose to agree or disagree with. No one wants your diary or journal. Those things are exciting to middle school, pubescent, youngsters. If you want to share your story, I hope you learned something valuable from your experiences or at least developed an opinion on life outside of your bubble of the world. Adults like to be opinionated on things. Your approach shouldn’t necessarily be persuasive, but firm, factual and logical.
